If you have an infected tooth from a cavity or trauma, root canal therapy can restore it back to its normal function. Here at Bloom Dental Group, we provide comfortable and efficient root canal treatment for patients in the San Mateo, California, area.

What is a root canal?

Underneath your tooth’s white enamel and hard dentin, the tooth pulp is a soft tissue that contains nerves and blood vessels and delivers nourishment.

Cavities or a fractured or injured tooth can lead to infection in the pulp. When the internal pulp in your tooth is inflamed or infected, a root canal procedure can restore normal function and eliminate pain in the tooth. Root canals involve removing inflamed pulp and cleaning inside the tooth and canal to relieve pain.

What conditions do root canals treat?

Root canals treat inflamed and infected teeth, most often caused by decay or injury.

During the procedure, the inflamed pulp tissue is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected. Then, the tooth is filled and restored with a filling or crown so that it looks and feels like a natural tooth.

What can I expect when getting a root canal?

Patient comfort is the first priority during a root canal appointment. We numb the area so that you don't feel discomfort during the root canal procedure. Then, we remove any damaged tooth surfaces or cavities, and make an opening into the nerve chamber. The chamber is cleaned and medicated. Then we place a filling material into the nerve canal and chamber to prevent bacteria from re-entering the area.

Most root canal treatments require only one to two appointments. Once the root canal is complete, the tooth is no longer vital. Placing a crown over the tooth can allow the tooth to withstand normal use for several more decades. A temporary filling will be placed in the tooth while a permanent crown is customized. The treatment is completed in our office - no need for a specialist visit.
